Both of these trustworthy family haulers were presented 25 years earlier, and while they may deal with it in different ways, both are outstanding options for those needing AWD capable vehicles. While the RAV4 might look a lot more truck-like, it's actually the wagonesqe 2020 Outback that has more off-road reputation. However, because a lot of car buyers will never take their vehicles off-road can the more-capable Outback take on the daily commuter inspired RAV4? Let's find out!

Performance Highlights

As the even more capable off-roader, you might expect that the '20 Subaru Outback is the stronger performer and you 'd be right. The power plant found in most Outback models is the 2.5L DOHC Boxer 4-cylinder engine, it generates 182hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. The primary engine in the RAV4 is likewise a 2.5L 4-cylinder but it produces 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Pretty similar numbers, it's when you consider the optional engines you can see what the automaker actually desired. The optional engine in the RAV4 is a Hybrid setup that has a total of 219hp. It's clearly meant for commuting, not challenging the road less taken. It's clearly been designed for running errands, not testing the road less traveled. The optional engine in the Outback shows off its off-road nature, it's a 2.4L Turbocharged 4cyl engine that generates 260hp, and has plainly been designed for off-road shenanigans. The Outback is just offered in AWD trim while the RAV4 starts as FWD yet offers All-Wheel Drive at added expense.

Design Highlights

As is becoming common on most brand-new vehicles, both vehicles have LED headlights, LED DRL, and 17-inch wheels. The fascinating thing is that the 'wagon' has more ground clearance than the Sport Utility Vehicle, AND the base wheels on the RAV4 are steel wheels with hubcaps. Hubcaps?? In 2019? The Outback can be updated to LED Steering Responsive Headlights, 18-inch wheels, and a hands-free Power Rear hatch. Inside, both cars begin with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, but where the RAV4 is just upgradeable to an 8-inch display the Outback can upgrade to a positively massive 11.6-inch system. Both vehicles can be optioned with heated/ventilated front seating but only the Outback can be acquired with leather seating.

Both automobiles have a wide variety of safety features included, but again it's the all-new Subaru Outback with the far better choices. Subaru Symmetrical AWD, High Beam Assist and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology are installed on all '20 Outbacks. That says each Outback owner will have Adaptive Cruise Control w/ Lane Centering, Pre-collision Braking, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Lane Keep Assist. The RAV4 includes similar modern technology in their Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 yet you will be required to pay more if you want All-Wheel Drive. Both have upgradeable stereo systems but while the Outback includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all trims, the RAV4 only has Apple CarPlay as an option.
